Proud of Hi, Anxiety audience, raising money for Bi-polar Support Group

Recently performed Hi Anxiety at Ducie Bridge and am SO proud of my amazing audience who all donated over and above the ticket price to raise a whopping £200 for a local Bi-polar Support group. It’s so important to me to raise money for this group, as they receive no core funding and the group is run entirely by volunteer service users.

I dropped the cash off to the group last week and they told me that the money will ensure they can have meetings for another 6 months. When I was there, there were close to 30 people turning up for the meeting – shows there is such a demand for the important role that this group offers.

It’s such a lifeline it is to some people so well done to all those who came along – we did a good thing!

Hi Anxiety – progress at work or work in progress?

Well, its post the showing of the show, to a warm packed room of folk, we all shared tears and laughter, a very special night. And now I am ready to proceed with what I learnt. Having recovered from being overwhelmed and exhausted emotionally and physically, I’ve learnt just how much it takes to do a one person show, how much focus and energy you need, how much faith you need, how much you cannot let any seeds of doubt enter your mind. And then you have to put all of that to one side, put yourself to one side and really look at the show, what does it need what can it lose. Having had sometime to sift through all the great feedback, negative becomes positive, and can I just say I’m loving the way things grow, I’m loving being open to sharing the work and taking in the changes, I would never of been able to do this before, and now is the time, loving the process, becomes loving working with it. Team Hi Anxiety is go.

Thanks @DuckieLondon!

Thank you all the gang at Duckie, a wonderful audience, especially all the handsome men with beards, oh and Dom behind the bar, and Paul, who ended up once naked on stage at Duckie with a magicians wand up his you know where !!! Had a great night, remember never arrange to meet your mum in Debenhams when you are coming down!!! And when everything gets too much you are never too far away from a Greggs…see you soon Duckie….4th of January, its a date !

Hi, Anxiety. Back on the stage in Mcr @DucieBridge. Come see me!

Hi, Anxiety Promo Image-001I loved performing Hi, Anxiety at the Contact earlier this year. The 30 minute work in progress has now been developed into an hour long show – still a work in progress! – and I get to perform it as part of the Women In Comedy Festival in October.

I’m performing at the gorgeous Ducie Bridge in town, they’re lovely friendly staff, we can take beer up stairs into the venue – and they’ve even got a lovely smoking terrace on the first floor!

The show is on for one night only and it’s on Tuesday 22nd October, 8pm – 9pm. Tickets are sold on the door with all proceeds going to a local Bipolar Support group.

Hope to see you there!

I love doing street performance – I could get addicted – Door-stoppers work it in Kendal again

Another wonderful time doing the naughty Bonjella and Rubella at the Mint festival in Kendal, Such joy to be able  to play out in the public spaces with the public, it s actually one of the few times that I think the public lets its guard down and becomes part of a playfullness that we are not usually  encouraged to do,  to have had the opportunity to tickle and play and let people laugh is such a wonderthingly thing to do . I say yes to more to more playing in the streets .

I’d do it for free I love it that much, but I prefer to get paid, I’m trying to get paid more these days, I’m trying, and I know us creative play makers sometimes struggle with getting paid for what we create, or maybe its just me!!! But I am practicing getting money! Money for what I create so that I can create ….

If you know anyone who fancies paying for the cheeky Door Stoppers, then check out the shiny new website here:

If you can’t wait to see us in the flesh, then have a look at us in action at this year’s Larmer Tree Festival, down south!

“The script flowed like the Stella and her performance was faultless.” First review now in!

Got my first review of Hi, Anxiety and it’s really positive, am so happy. Thanks so much to Alison for taking the time to write it, it means a lot and makes me feel happy that I’m on the right track with the show. The review site is ace – they only review things they love, to share the joy – what a great ethos! They say,

“We are a good news, happy go-lucky, flipside of the coin, other side of the rainbow, everyone’s a winner sort of a website. We look at fringe, London based and regional theatre, old and new films, current events, festivals, gigs and much… much more and we pick out the ones we liked or really think we should advertise and we review it here, for you.”

I was also given my very first 5 star rating here by Alison. This is a fantastic blog for women in Manchester by four Manchester women! I’m chuffed to be included on her site and would recommend checking it out if you get a chance.

Had such a giggle working with Carrie English on Saturday on our street theatre duo, The Door Stoppers. Big thanks to Teacup for letting us manage the door for the Saturday morning rush! We’re hoping to get booked for summer festivals so if you’re interested – or know of a door that needs The Door Stoppers treatment – then get in touch!

Have you got what it takes to pass through the VIP rope?

Interview on Sam Walker today, BBC Radio Manchester

Had a fantastic time this morning talking to Sam Walker on BBC Radio Manchester, all about the new show at the Contact, Hi, Anxiety. We chatted about my mum, depression, breaking down, being a coper not a carer – all the things that seem to help other people hear about so they feel less alone or like these troubles are only a problem in their lives.

Sam asked her callers to get in touch if they wanted to contribute stories for the next new show – the Mental Health Monologues (I know, I need to work on the name!)

So, if you’ve got a story or would like to chat me to more then you can leave a comment for me below on email me on: debsgatenby@hotmail.com

Feel like I have a mission in my hands

Saturday 1st December 2012 I took part in a TED x Women.   Saturday was a epic day. To be on stage with these womenfolk who have done and changed things in the world for positive change. There I was with what I had to share, one story of one person who has lived with depression that was my story from my life, from my heart, and I was going into the unknown by sharing this personal story, a risk, an exposure, yes.

What happened ? It did what I hoped, dared and dreamed it might, but didn’t really know it would.  It connected, made emotional connection, mind to mind, but mostly it connected  people who have this also in their lives, they are a carer, they are watching someone they love in a depression, they are trying to walk alongside someone they love in pain.

All the buttons it presses in me it presses in them .

But we talk about it we start to erase the  taboo, we share how we are  caring, we are coping – I say  I became a carer, no that’s not quite right, I became a coper!! And I am trying my bestest to have compassion and patience everyday.

And now I feel this feeling in my guts that I have a mission a desire to keep on keeping on with this. To make my words and this story about me, my mum, our mental health, into something…positive for change

Stop Press! Door Whores are up to trouble at this Fri’s @Mothers_Ruin @ContactMcr

Yes it’s true! You may have seen my previous post about playing up at Kendal’s MINT festival earlier in the year. Well, next in line for the VIP experience is Mother’s Ruin. They’ve decided it’s time for the Contact audience to have a once over and we’re happy to oblige.

So, get yourself down to the Contact this Fri……but make sure you’re dressed for the occasion!
